Breuil-Cervinia is one of the world’s top ski resorts with the best snow record in Italy. It is located in Northwest Italy, at the foot of the Matterhorn peak, off the Aosta Valley. The Plateau Rosa glacier at 3,480 metres connects the high altitude ski area of Cervinia with both Zermatt and Valtournenche in Switzerland.
Originally a mountaineering spot, Breuil-Cervinia has become a welcoming village with different architectural styles and easy access to the ski slopes. The place is particularly vibrant during the weekends when Italian day-visitors from the surrounding cities come to enjoy the beautiful views and take part in different activities. Most of the ski slopes are facing south, which is also an upside for sunseekers working on their tan.
Winter sports and activities
The resort is positioned at about 2,050 metres above sea level. This high altitude enables low temperatures which guarantee excellent skiing conditions nearly all year round. The daily average temperatures during winter months are between -5 °C and -10 °C, while in the summer, they are about 8-10 °C.
The Cervinia ski area is serviced by 21 modern and fast lifts. It is ideal for beginners and intermediate skiers who can enjoy a total of 150 km lovely long runs. For the more advanced skiers and adventure seekers, one of the most popular things to give you adrenaline rush is heli-skiing. Since Breuil-Cervinia is interconnected via ski lifts with Valtourenche on the Italian and Zermatt on the Swiss side, purchasing an International Ski Pass will allow you to ski on both sides. If you’d like to test your endurance, you can head up to the highest cable at 3883 meters Klein Matterhorn and have 20km run down to Valtournench.
The freestylers can enjoy one of the best terrain parks in Italy. You can access the Indian terrain park by the Plan Maison or Pancheron chairlifts. It is around 1.2 kilometres long and includes rails, kickers and boxes, created for all levels.
Accommodation and dining
The village’s been built with a purpose to accommodate visitors coming here to appreciate the lovely ski terrains. This means that you will find different types of hotels, from 2-starred budget-oriented to 5-starred glamorous ones. Other alternatives are self-catering apartments and chalets.
There are a dozen restaurants available in Cervinia with some offering self-service at lower costs. On the Italian side, you can find cheaper dining compared to the Zermatt side. For a quick drink before on in-between ski sessions, there are few slope-side bars. Although Cervinia is not exactly a party place, there are a few decent bars, and the nightlife livens up during the weekends.
