The Shine Of Paris

Going down Rue de Rennes one cannot pass by without noticing the variety of people walking down the street…young, old, white, black, yellow, tourists, locals…everybody doing their own routine, from shopping to chatting in the recognizable, charming coffee bars or brasseries over a cup of some French wine, or salad. Turning around the corner of a street in any part of Paris, from Montparnasse, Montmartre, Marais to Champs Elysees one can discover a city within the city, a whole new view, a whole new variety of smells, secrets that only the eye of the curious can see, and keep it for himself, like his own miracle, his own new island…

Everything and everyone you see while exploring the city is surrounded with an aura of some slow elegance and luxury…the city lives with the pulse of its present residents, calmly, eternally, enjoying every moment of life and beauty. The only thing that never slows down or sleeps is the city transport. The buses, cars and especially the metro, can take you to distant places of this small universe sooner or later. Paris airport taxi services are a great transport option to and from the airport. Chaotic on first sight, but somehow everyone seems to manage driving in that concrete jungle and reach his destination. The most elegant in its movement is the city metro. Diving underground and then again emerging on the surface just to show you the beauty of the buildings and their balconies full of colorful flowers surrounding his way…For the ones that are not in a hurry or have no particular destination, another way to enjoy the city views is from the docks of the boats that slowly pull their legs in Seine-the river that inspired plenty of writers and poets. There are also long canals with boats in other parts of Paris that give ride to the ones that want to see something other than the famous tourist sights…

On the other hand, there is a whole other universe that opposite the lights that surround it (like in the red district, Moulin Rouge, suburbs) is full of some grotesque figures of people, smells and actions that can occur only in the deepest and darkest places of the human subconscious. However, Paris is a city of light, the ones that shine from people and places during the day and the ones that reveal the beauty and the secrets of the night.

Bite through a croissant filled with dark chocolate and warm cup of coffee.  After breakfast you can visit the lively street markets full of fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, cheese, collectables or books. Marche aux Puces de St-Ouen is one of the biggest flea markets in the world ceramics, vintage furniture cameras the place where you will find a confusing and yet well organized mixture of usesless and priceless objects. You must not forget to check out the fromageries and taste different types of cheese.

The Cathedral of Notre Dame and its gothic architecture is 750 years old and was the focus of Catholics in Paris for 7 centuries as well as an inspiration  for “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” a story told and retold by writers, movie directors and musicals.  The Louvre Museum will provide you with a glance of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. A museum which holds over 35,000 art pieces.

Climb the hill of Montmartre and you will be bedazzled by one of the most beautiful views of the city. On it stands the Sacre Coeur byzantine style church. Built in memory of fallen French soldiers it took 46 years to build. Walking down the stairs of the Montmartre you will find young people gathered playing guitars and singing the music of Muse, Tool and other  world famous musicians. In the past great artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas worked in this area and used it as an inspiration for their artwork.

Other interesting sights are Hotel de Ville housing the local administration, Place de la Concorde the biggest square in Paris, the Pompidou centre a modern high tech building, holding a vast library, national museum of modern art, and a centre for music and accosting research, the Versailles Palace, Arc de Triomphe and many more.

To end the day, watch the sunset on the Eiffel Tower. Its 320m height and its unique appearance make it a symbol of the city and one of the main attractions for tourists.

You will never have enough time to live through it, you will always need more time to experience a new corner, a nightclub with talented young musicians or a gallery with paintings that will inspire you.
