Kota Kinabalu Transport Guide

Kota Kinabalu is named after the nearby mountain, positioned on Borneo's coast, facing the South China Sea. The main transportation is organized with buses, but vans and minuses are also in use. The bus service runs on a regular and fixed schedule.

Two ports serve the city, Kota Kinabalu Port and Sepanggar Bay Container Port which are mainly for cargo and containers. A passenger ferry terminal provides services to nearby islands, departing from Jesselton Point two times per day. Flexible travels with speedboats are available if you wish to explore the islands at your pace.

Kota Kinabalu has three bus terminals. Tun Razak Road terminal handles city routes, while the North Kota Kinabalu Bus terminal manages intercity connections to Ranau, Semporna, Sandak and Tawan. KK Central terminal is another bus station which provides intercity connections.

The city is connected to the only railway system in East Malaysia operated by Sabah State Railways. Regular trains run to Tanjung Aru and Tenom with several stops along the way. For travels from Kota Kinabalu to Papar a leisure service is available, with a colonial steam train.

The central hub for Malaysia Airlines is Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI), the second busiest in the country. The main getaway airport to Sabah operates with domestic and international flights to China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and Australia (Perth).

Hourly airport buses operate to/from the city centre, starting at 08:00. The bus makes two stops along the way, at Center Point and Horizon Hotel, and terminates at Merdeka Square.

Another airport transfer option is by minibus. They stop along the main road, which is away from the airport. Minibuses terminate at the south end of the city, where you can change to another transport mean to reach Kota Kinabalu central area.

One of the fastest ways to reach the city is by hiring an airport taxi. You need to purchase a ticket first before you take a cab in the designated area. Night fare surcharge applies for travelling during the night, which increases the rate for over 50%. Negotiate the rates before taking these services, as overcharge is highly possible.

Pre-booking an online airport taxi is the most convenient way to travel. It is a door-to-door transfer service which you can book online before your trip. The driver will monitor your flight and adjust the pickup time if there are any delays. He will make sure you reach your destination on time.

Our airport transfer rates are fixed without any hidden costs. Additional services like booking updates and cancellation up to 24 hours before the transfer are free of charge.

We offer our services in other cities in Malaysia, as well, including Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Langkawi, Penang and Senai.
