Its origin and life is intimately bound to its University, founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros. The University shaped this city, promoting a town planning because of and for the students. Thus, this university nature and being the birthplace to Cervantes turned Alcalá into one of the places where Spanish reached its adulthood as a language. An old town with historical and artistic interest, royal palaces and gardens on the banks of the River Tagus shape the layout in Aranjuez. This layout shows an exquisite balance between nature and man, watercourses and garden design, forests and royal architecture. For all these reasons, in 2001 UNESCO declared Aranjuez a Cultural Landscape. Other popular attractions are “El tren de la fresa” (Strawberry Train) and Fiestas del motín de Aranjuez, a recreation of the mutiny occurred in 1808.

This World Heritage city is located on the heart of the Castilla y La Mancha area, by the shores of La Hoz del río Huécar, Cuenca has unique features that make it a peculiar place to visit. First of all, you must stop and see the famous “Hanging Houses” right on the edge of the cliff. These constructions have a popular origin, however they can be considered as gothic buildings. Today, only three of them still remain as a museum. You will be able to visit them and see their original components, as their wooden interior and the so called “Mermaid house” o Casa de la Sirena.
Other interesting places to see are the Cathedral from the XIII century, an impressive Christian monument, the Castle with small parts from the Muslim Wall, El Cerro del Socorro, the highest viewpoint from where you can take a look at the city of Cuenca. Visit its great compilation of Convents and street Sculptures, as well as its many Churches. And of course, you cannot miss La Ciudad Encantada, a limestone rock city located on the Natural Park of the Sierra de Cuenca.
Located in the middle of Sierra de Guadarrama, just 50 kilometres from Madrid, is the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Mount Abantos, its pine trees and la dehesa La Herrería compose the natural landscape of this place, which has in the monastery of El Escorial its main axis.
El Valle de los Caídos (The Valley of the Fallen) or Abadía de la Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caídos (the Abbey of the Holy Cross of the Valley of the Fallen) is a monument built between 1940 and 1958 located in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid. It is 9 km north of El Escorial in the Sierra de Guadarrama. The site belongs to Spanish National Heritage since 1957, the year of its opening to the public.
The Real Sitio de La Granja de San Ildefonso, or also known as San Ildefonso or La Granja, is a town belonging to the province of Segovia. Among its monuments, the most important are the Royal Palace and its gardens with fountains made up of intricate water movements and mythological characters and stories of its own. Just like mythology in Versailles is dedicated to Apollo, who represents the sun, La Granja (The Farm) is dedicated to Diana, who represents the moon. La Granja de San Ildefonso is designated as Royal Site and Historical Monuments.
Toledo is one of the Spanish towns with greater wealth of monuments. It is known as “the city of the three cultures" because of the coexistence for centuries of Christians, Jews and Arabs. Toledo keeps behind its walls an artistic and cultural legacy made up of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues. This great diversity of artistic styles makes the old town of the capital of La Mancha a real outdoor museum, declared a World Heritage Site in 1986.
