In the past Kyoto served Japan as the capital city, but today it's one of the county's largest cities with 1.5 million people. The bus station in Kyoto provides a lot of daily routes at a moderate cost. The buses run from 7am to 10pm and night buses are available too. You can check bus information in front of Kyoto station where you can purchase bus tickets and pick up maps. They also offer one-day unlimited travel passes which includes unlimited travel on Kyoto buses and also sightseeing pass that allows unlimited use of the buses and the subway.
If you plan to see the city centre, the subway is the right choice. It has two lines and covers the central part of the city. Tickets are available on any subway ticket office.
You can find taxis everywhere in the city, especially in the centre. They offer a great service, are comfortable and also a competent alternative to buses. Drivers are very tourist friendly and most of them speak English and Chinese.
