Kolkata Transport Guide

The public transportation in the central business and financial hub of Eastern India includes a suburban railway, metro, tram, extensive bus system and auto-rickshaws.

The suburban railway network connects Kolkata suburbs with the metropolitan area. It operates with six lines and 19 branch lines, with several interchange stations with the metro.

Kolkata metro was the first underground rail in the country and started operating with one line, while the second one was introduced in 2020. Line 1 runs from Netaji Bhawan to Esplanade, while Line 2 is known as the East-West corridor. Today, it's the fifth-longest rapid transit system in India.

West Bengal Transport Corporation handles the tramway and bus network in the city. Kolkota tramway is the only and oldest electric operating network in India with 25 lines. Although the service is slow, trams give charm to the town, and they are a real legacy. They have greater capacity than buses and run through narrow streets. In contrast, buses are widely used as the extensive network serves almost every part of the metropolitan area, as well as other cities in the state. Besides the regular day service, dedicated night routes are available as well.

Four train stations serve the city: Howrah train station (the largest), Chitpur, Shalimar and Sealdah train station. The railway network is expansive with connection to all big stations in India including trains from Kolkata to Haldia, Digha, Dhanbad, Jamshedpur, Kharagpur and Mayapur.

Frequent bus services connect Kolkata with Dhaka in Bangladesh operated by governmental agencies WBSTSC and BRTC and private companies Shohagh, Green Line and Shuamoli. The central station for intercity and interstate connections is the Esplanade Bus station.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) is Kolkata's main airport operating mostly with flights to South East Asia; however, there are several flights to and from Europe too. Yearly, the airport handles over 21.8 million passengers. The award-winning airport has an established transport system connecting the airport with the city by prepaid taxis and buses.

The government prepaid taxi counter is located inside the airport. The fare is usually rounded by the agents and passengers pay more than what stated on the receipt. The taxi vehicles are coloured yellow. Regular prepaid taxis are also available, and the booths are operating 24/7 and tickets could be bought in the arrivals hall. Radiotaxi (Megacabs) can also be hired at the terminal, the lower level.

Bus route VS1 operates from Kolkata Airport to Esplanades every 30 minutes during the day. Another route, VS2, runs between the Kolkata Airport and Howrah every 10 minutes, while bus routes V1 and SV8, connect the Kolkata Airport with Tollygune.
