Chennai Transport Guide

The birthplace of the railway system in India has extensive public transportation. The first electric tram in the country was operating until 1953, while today, Chennai public transportation consists of metro, buses, trains and auto-rickshaws.

In 2001, the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) was opened, a station for all intercity buses that run within 50 km of the city limits. The bus system in Chennai supports passenger flow of 5 million each day. Over 4000 buses operate on 622 routes. Beside intercity buses, it handles connections to all major cities in India. It is the largest bus station on the continent. An estimated number of 500,000 passengers per day are recorded at this terminal. Inside the station, a metro service is available, with frequent connections to the rest of the city.

The local suburban train system (MRTS - Mass Rapid Transit System) includes six lines. The trains run on a schedule of 15 minutes connecting the city centre to the suburban area. The most used route is from Chennai Beach to Thiryvanmiyur and Tambaram. The metro system operates with two lines (green and blue) covering 45 km in length.

Chennai is home to two main train stations, Chennai Egmore station for regional trains to Kattankulathur, Mahabalipuram, Muttukadu, Nemmeli and all places in Tamil Nady. The second one, Chennai Central station, handles long-distance trains to Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Madurai.

Despite the auto-rickshaws reputation to rip off the passengers, it is the quickest transportation mean for short travels.

The Chennai International Airport (MAA) is the third busiest airport in India. The domestic and international terminals are adjacent, and they have traffic of 22.5 million passengers per year. Currently, modernisation and expansion are undergoing at the airport.

Chennai Airport connects to Chennai via metro, bus and a railway station. The airport railway station is named Tirusulam, located 500 meters away from the airport. The metro station is directly connected to the airport with trains every 20 minutes going to Shenoy Nagar, Nehru Park, Vadapalani and Koyambedu.

The airport taxi rate would depend on the distance covered and the operator. Prepaid taxis are usually not air-conditioned, and can be booked at taxi booths in each terminal. Even though the terminals are next to each other, the prepaid taxis have different rates to the same destination. The vehicles are with black or yellow tops. Alternatively, there is also a call taxi for which you will need to make a phone reservation once you arrive at the airport.

It is common for taxi drivers to be harassing passengers into using their service, and they usually stand outside the airport. To avoid such situation, book your airport transfer in advance. We offer the Chennai airport private transfer service at the lowest rates. The service is available for booking online.

The latest prices for taxi transfer from Chennai Airport to Chennai city centre are on the link. When booking the service, you will be required to provide flight details so the driver can monitor your flight, and in case of delay, he will wait for you accordingly. The displayed rates online are fixed and all-inclusive, no hidden costs. The booking is easy, and it takes only several minutes.

The airport is quite busy; however, the drivers are professional and will meet you with a sign showing your name on it. Emergency contact numbers and meeting point instructions are provided for every booking. Begin your journey stress-free; enjoy your ride, knowing you will be transferred to your destination safely in comfort.
