Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, has a good public transport network. If you don't wish to drive in Ankara, there is a variety of fast and cheap transportation options. Municipality buses, public buses, dolmus, taxis and the subway are part of the public transportation system in Ankara.
The Ankara Metro consists of three metro lines (M1, M2 and M3) and one light metro line, Ankaray. The rapid transit system in Ankara is a fast and efficient way to reach different destinations in the city. The Metro and Ankaray intersect at Kizilay Station.
Ankara is part of the Turkish high-speed rail system (YHT), so there are regular fast trains to Istanbul Pendik (via Eskisehir) and Konya. The travel time to Eskisehir and Konya is 90 minutes, while the journey from Ankara to Istanbul includes three and a half hours to Pendik, 25 km east of the city centre and 90 minutes transfer to Istanbul.
The city of Ankara is served by two types of buses, municipality and privately run, that cover the whole city. Buses are a cheap way of transportation, especially useful to reach destinations not covered by the metro. However, keep in mind that at peak times they are very crowded and not very comfortable.
Intercity buses terminate at the main bus station, ASTI. There are regular bus lines to most of the cities in Turkey and they are a much faster alternative than the trains. You can reach the bus station by metro from Kizilay Square and other locations in the city centre.
Dolmus is a special shared taxi service, found only in Turkey. The shared taxi follows specific routes and it may be a car or a minibus. Each passenger pays taxi fare according to the distance travelled.
Ankara Esenboga International Airport (ESB) is located about 28 km from the city. It handles frequent daily flights to and from Istanbul and other European destinations.
The bus line number 442 runs from Ankara Airport and stops at multiple locations including Asti Station, Kizilay Square and Ulus (the historical centre of the city, close to the museums and baths).
