The public transportation in Catania includes the AMT buses and the metro. The Catania metro network has only 7 stops and many stations under construction. For travels within the city limits, it is recommended to avoid public transportation and walk instead. For travels outside the city limits, the most convenient way is to book a private taxi transfer.
The main bus station is centrally located, opposite the train station. Buses run frequently from Catania to Taormina, Syracuse, Enna, Messina and Palermo. Buses to Naples and Rome (10 hours journey) are also available on a less frequently.

Taking a ferry to Catania is a cheaper option, but it takes longer to get there and due to seasickness most travellers skip it. The shuttle bus service (Alibus) departing from Catania Airport takes around 20 minutes to the city centre. The buses run every 20 minutes from 05:00 until midnight. Public bus line 457 operates every 40 minutes but the trip takes longer than with the shuttle bus.
